PRE THROUGH K-12TH GRADE EXPERIENCE Richard has over 32 years of pre-k through 12th grade experience in education, serving in various leadership roles including curriculum director, pre-k director, home school director, coach, as well as elementary principal and assistant principal. He has served as State School Superintendent for over a decade. |
SCHOOL LEADER & CLASSROOM TEACHER Richard served as a classroom social studies teacher for 14 years as well as being a teacher mentor and department chair. As Richard moved into various leadership roles, he never forgot what it's like to be a classroom teacher. Richard and his wife Lisha, a retired 30-year educator, have been married for over 30 years. |

RURAL ROOTS Richard graduated from Fitzgerald High School in South Georgia, taught in Irwin County, and lives in Tifton, Georgia. Richard has been a voice for rural Georgia in Atlanta. Richard established the Office of Rural Education to support rural schools and communities. Richard also has received the Honorary American FFA Degree and he was named an honorary member of the Georgia Young Farmer Association. |
MILITARY FAMILY Richard grew up in a military family with his father serving in the Navy. As superintendent, Richard has been a strong advocate for military families and students by establishing a military families liaison position and Military Flagship recognition. As a man of faith, Richard has a record of serving youth and his community. |

BUSINESS BACKGROUND Richard brings a business background to the superintendent's position, having been a lead purchasing agent for a national/multi-national laser company and a former small business owner. For his workforce development efforts, Richard has been recognized as Who's Who by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and was endorsed by the Georgia Chamber in the last election. |
NATIONAL & STATE RECOGNITIONS Richard has been recognized numerous times as one of Georgia Trend's 100 Most Influential Georgians for increasing literacy, reducing high-stakes testing, and expanding opportunities. Richard received a National Arts Education Association award for expanding fine arts and he was recognized by Voices for Georgia's Children for supporting the whole child. |
